71st Annual Golden Globe Awards–Best Dressed List

By: Hina P. Ansari

‘Tis the season of award shows and  I LOVE them. The red carpet coverage alone is highly entertaining thanks to the multi-hour lead up to the actual event filled by one couture number after another. Coupled with the fact that I’m a HUGE movie fanatic which is why I’m tuning in the first place (yes the whole point of these award shows is to celebrate this year’s cinematic contributions, remember?). Seriously, this is my playoffs with my Oscars being the Superbowl.

So when it’s Polar Vortexing out there, I just let my fabulous fashionable film stars shed some much-needed warmth onto my cold and wintery nights. And I’m seriously basking.

This year because  myself along with my fellow Rampers , just had so much fun sharing our thoughts on Ramp’s twitter page and on my own twitter page  I thought, why not this year instead of just focusing on one favourite celebrity look, as we have done in the past, put together our own teeny weeny list of best dressed celebs who graced the carpet and for some, the winner’s podium!

So … ahem … here we go!

The One Who Doesn’t Need To Be “Listed” — Whatsoever

Cate Blanchett

Golden Globe Winner for Best Actress for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Queen Cate was statuesque in Armani Privé. She is on another level of couture that including her in our “Best Dressed” just seems, well, pure nonsense. Because it’s Cate bloody Blanchett. There’s her, then there are the rest, mere mortal (beautiful) red carpet dwellers.

The New Guard

Lupita Nyong’o

We immediately noticed Lupita Nyong’o's well honed fashion literacy when she walked the red carpet for 12 Years A Slave when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.  This year it was pretty much the consensus that she would look gorgeous even if she just tied a Hefty garbage bag around her waist with a thin black belt or two (hint, hint, Jennifer Lawrence). Jaws dropped when she graced the world’s red carpeted stage in a fashion-forward Ralph Lauren poppy red gown with cape detail. One thing Lupita knows is that she knows her strengths: which is her stunning natural beauty and her fantastic mahogany hue. No need to play dress-up and go all costumey in the beauty department. She didn’t need to. Ravishing from head to toe. When she was on stage with the cast to collect their Golden Globe Award for Best Film (Drama), I couldn’t take my eyes off of her as she stood behind director Steve McQueen. No offense Steve.

Green Is The Warmest Colour

Olivia Wilde

Those cheekbones. Those natural cat eyes. That baby bump. A perfect Trifecta for this Gucci green sequinned gown which just elevated Olivia Wilde to super fashion star status. True, she didn’t disappoint in the past, but this year she let her little one be the shining star and didn’t distract from any over-the-top accessories or spray-canned sculpted overly-coiffed hair. She kept it easy breezy and that just made us love her even more, not too mention her great turn in Spike Jonze’s film Her, for which he won Best Original Screenplay.

Divine in Dior

Emma Watson

The Harry Potter star was absolutely divine in this Dior cigarette pant and draped overlay/blouse. Love the drape and the contrast of the coral hue against the slick silhouette of her jet black pants. In a sea of organza, tulle and sequins gowns,  it’s  cooler than cool. I thought I was in love.

Then. She. Turned. Around.

Whatever you want to call it, a) I need one and b) it was drop-dead gorgeous.

Pop of Colour

Sandra Bullock

Forget that she’s turning 50.  Just try to forget that crazy notion just for one second. But the fact that that this Golden Globe nominee for Best Actor in Motion Picture (Drama) for Gravity graced the red carpet in this gorgeous colour blocked gown by Prabal Gurung just left me speechless. The silhouette and the draping — both gorgeous. What I also loved was that she deviated from her usual, monochrome,  form-fitted head-to-toe look.  This time, she was really feeling colour. I mean really feeling it. We first noticed her new love affair for bright and beautiful hues at the Palm Springs International Film Festival a few days ago. Clearly, she’s loving her new fashionable turn and isn’t looking back.

Modern Woman

Julie Bowen

Now this is where I get really excited. When you think all is lost for someone, as much as they try and try, they just can’t seem to hit it right on the fashion target. Well today was not that day for the Golden Globe favourite primetime hit television show, Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen. Beaming in Carolina Herrera, I love the colour combo, the velvet structured blouse, with the velvet waist cumber band-esque wrap and the capped sleeve. I do. Don’t hate me for it. I . Just. Do.

Helen Mirren

Nominated for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie in  her role in HBO’s television film Phil Spector, Helen Mirren is the epitome of grace, class who — and it must be said — has one helluva body. Wearing a form fitting gorgeous light green Jenny Packham dress, Madame Mirren has always exuded such elegance that she along with the other Queen — Cate — aren’t list-worthy simply because they are too great for this drivel of a Best Dressed List. And that’s why we decided to bookend this list with fashion (and cinematic) regalness.

You’re Welcome.

We present to you the Leto Boys. Why? Because we love their tailored look, slick scarf action and the fact that these boys gave the boring old tux an edgier turn without going down the predictable velvet route (yes we’re looking at you Matthew McConaughey). Velvet was so 2005.
