Córdoba-born  Glenda Lopez started making jewellery from an early age. Her edgy, contemporary collections are built around themes and stories and experiment with different techniques and materials. Based in Valencia, Spain she recently unveiled her debut collection for her new line of “Collectibles.” Titled “Strange Magic,” the delicate silver pieces feature quirky motifs that, for her, have a mystical appeal.

Did you always want to be a designer?

From an early age, I loved art. I was a very observant child and used to draw everything around me. Then one summer when I was 13, I started making necklaces, earrings and bracelets. My mother gave me a box of beads, lace leather and lots of appliqués to play around with and from that moment I knew I wanted to be a designer.

How would you describe your jewellery?

My collections are based on concepts or stories. I try to synthesize the concept and form and create something that’s fun, ironic and mystical.

Tell us about your new line “Collectibles”? How does it differ from previous lines?

Collectibles is a fresh, more accessible line. It’s more youthful for those who want to have a special piece of jewellery without having to buy fake or imitation pieces. It’s based on specially chosen symbols. The first chapter is “Strange Magic” in which I created a collection inspired by four elements that for me have a mystical significance. The next chapter will come out next year and will be inspired by symbols based around another concept.

Why magic?

I chose magic because jewellery and magic have always been closely connected. Jewellery was used a lot in ancient times as amulets and in rituals. Magic is something that interests me a lot, above all because it signifies something that we can’t prove or touch. Before designing Strange Magic, I did a lot of research on symbols, types of magic and the meaning of numbers. But afterwards I thought: why not create my own mystical symbols? Why not create my own magic? And from there I started to think about things and symbols that evoke mystery. I ended up choosing a rose and its thorns (a symbol that’s both fragile and hard), emeralds from ancient jewellery, geometric pentagons and skeleton hands which are a continuation of the ongoing theme of death in my work.

What materials do you like to work with?

I mainly work with silver, brass and plated metals. I like working with copper too but it’s difficult to maintain its natural colour and gold is another one of my favourite metals. I love gem stones as each one has something special. Obviously precious stones make any jewellery more beautiful but some shiny quartz or rock crystal can also make a piece of jewellery look spectacular.

What are your aspirations for the future?

In the future, I’d like to see my jewellery being sold all over the world. I would also like to make another kind of product, an object related to jewellery. I don’t aspire for much more, just to remain true to the essence of Glenda Lopez and be happy doing what I love and delivering my creations to the world.

What is the scene like in Valencia?

At the moment, owing to the crisis, fashion and design in Valencia is a bit stagnant, indeed in the whole of Spain. I’m not living in Valencia for the work opportunities; I live here because it’s a wonderful place. I work with an eye on what’s going on in the rest of the world but Valencia is a warm, cosy city with a beach, great weather all year round, excellent food and a standard of living that permits you to be happy with very little.

Tell us a secret.

I don’t have many secrets! I suppose that for those people who don’t know me personally, I am quite a secretive person. But as far as personal secrets go, I am what I do, that is to say, I have my own jewellery business because I’m a creative, curious and perseverant person and passionate about fashion. So now there are no more secrets!

Glenda Lopez’s Strange Magic collection is now available to buy online at ASOS Marketplace, Boticca.com and the designer’s official website http://www.glendalopez.es/.
