Designer Rebekka Jónsdóttir, was born in Iceland and lived her formative years in Arlington Virginia, USA. She honed her skills at the Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles where she also landed an extensive internship with noted french label, Rodarte. After graduating with her degree in Fashion Design in 2008,  she was on the road to launching her own brand. REY came to fruition in 2009 and since then has carved a pretty cool place in the Reykjavik fashion scene for its reliable, staples. Fresh from presenting her latest collection at Reykjavik Fashion Festival (check out our coverage here); she sat down and chatted with us about her love for design and the value of opinions and why sometimes its good to not be so flashy.

What made you decide to get into the fashion business?

After years of doing a whole lot of other things I decided to chase my dream.

Who inspired you when you were just starting out?

The Japanese fashion designers, Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester

Who inspires you now?

My friends are my biggest inspiration, but I am very interested in photography and make mood boards full of photos from the past.

Has your sources of inspiration changed in any way?

No not really.

What part of the day best inspires you?

Late at night.

From where do you gather your inspiration?

The people I work with.

What is the story board/inspiration behind your latest collection for Autumn/Winter 2013?

It was photos by Helmut Newton from the 60s , stage costumes from Isadora Duncan and party pics of Jerry Hall. Odd mix.

Your mantra is to ensure that fashion is in the details. Details being the key pieces that are timeless and lends itself in creating the overall look. Can you expand on that philosophy?

I want REY to become the owners favorite and trusted item in the wardrobe. It will never be the most flamboyant or sexy dress but it wants to be the most worn.

How do you unwind?

Read novels or drink wine with my closest friends.

What makes the fashion scene in Reykjavik so unique?

How most of us are truly friends and want to succed as a whole.

How does (if it does) the Reykjavik fashion consumer differ from other consumers?

I guess that most are more adventurous.

What makes the Reykjavik woman/man unique?

Are they unique?

What are the challenges of the Reykjavik fashion scene?

How small the industry is and how isolated we are on this island.

How does social media play a part in your overall branding?

I am taking baby steps but I can see that I will be using it more and more in the coming months.

What advice would you give to up-and-coming designers and design students who are interested in following this career path?

Only do this if you can not imagine doing anything else. It has great rewards but you will get knocked down so many times too.

What is the best advice you’ve received and still treasure today?

My best friend told me once that you can never please everyone. So if you are to believe the good things that someone says about your work, you have to believe the bad too. And it is much better that someone actually has an opinion about your work, [rather] than it not inspire any response.
