I sat down with Montreal-based designer and creator of the Coccolily fashion brand, Naana Tennachie Yankey and got to speak to her about how her recent trip to Ghana Fashion & Design Week was and got an insider look on her inspirations and beginnings.  Now a creator of a clothing line, designer bags and even her own beauty products Naana is a great inspiration for aspiring Canadian designers.

How did you get started as a fashion designer?

I have always yearned to be a designer since I was eight, but it was not until my internship with Marc Jacobs that I become more serious with fashion.

When it comes to the international fashion scene, how much are you involved in it?

I am become more involved with the global fashion industry by traveling and taking part with foreign fashion weeks outside Canada. Next season I will be taking part in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in South Africa and soon Copenhagen.

What are some of your favourite fashion designers?  International designers?

Façonabelle, Ferragamo, Burberry, and Versace. These are all my favorite designers.

How do you get inspired for a collection?

My experiences in life inspire me on each collection. It depends on what I am going through at the time.

Tell us a bit about the Coccolily brand and some new developments fans will see over the next year?

Coccolily is now using socially responsible methods to produce its products and is involved in fashion for development in emerging economies. Some exciting news is Coccolily’s new Holiday vegan nail polish collection will be available at the end of October just in time for holiday shopping. Over the next year Coccolily will be offering a wider range of product offerings.

Social media often helps people to get a following in the fashion world, how has social media helped you in your career? What channels do you use the most?

Social media has helped me have more effective personal relationships with my fans, by allowing me to respond and communicate with my fans personally and often. I use Facebook the most, then Pinterest, Twitter and Tumblr.

Do you have any advice for newcomers on the fashion scene or new designers on how to stay focused and motivated?

To stay focused and motivated, my secret is having faith in the destiny God has for each of us and thus, happily working towards it. Believe in yourself, work through your challenges, and have faith that you can and you will achieve.

How did it feel to be the only Canadian designer at Ghana Fashion & Design Week ? What was the experience like for you?

I was happy to represent Canada in my native Ghana and I was happy to share the fusion of my Ghanaian and Canadian culture. The highlight was meeting one of the Vogue Italia editors who enjoyed my show and showed a keen interest in how I was raised culturally.

What are the inspirations for your recent fashion collection?

The collection title is called; ‘Into the Exotic’ in which I bring my native Ghanaian culture to light with bold prints and mix it with Coccolily ‘s traditional style.
