 Pearls of wisdom.

By: Hina P. Ansari

Don’t you love it when a job leads you to your dream job? That’s what happened with jewellery designer, Jon De Porter. While working as a flight attendant, he discovered his love for pearls during a trip to Beijing, China. Fast-forward five years and his collection boasts an incredible array of semi-precious stones, South Sea pearls and other jewels goodies destined for that discerning clientele from his Toronto studio. During PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion Week, Jon sat down with us to discuss his involvement with this unique fashion initiative, his love of jewels and how they should be donned with a certain sense of self.

How did you get into this business?

In 2008, I was a flight attendant on reserve with an airline and I was sent last minute to Beijing. There, I visited a pearl market and that’s how I got into designing pearl jewelry. So that’s where it all started. I do pearls as a center of my collection but I also do semi-precious stone and I still travel all over the world. I have some very rare stones in vaults that I have not released yet.

Where are you located?

The Jon De Porter Private Shopping Suite is located in Toronto. [My clientele] can have a look inside  ”The Vault” and shop for custom pieces.

What is it about Gold South Sea pearls that have captured your design heart?

It’s so rare.  I have been calling New York and Geneva and Hong Kong to try to get my hands on some of these and it is almost impossible. I’m so proud to be the jeweler [for PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion Week] and presenting the Gold South Sea pearl.

What was your reaction when you were approached to participate at PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion Week?

I was overwhelmed with joy. It was the first occasion where I can justify all the hard work in getting these very rare pearls.

So do you hope that the mainstream will take away from seeing your collection as well as during PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion Week in general?

I’m a believer that jewelry is meant to adorn the body and not to make someone look rich. So whether someone’s budget is $95 or $17000, John De Porter Jewelry is something for everyone.  I’ve arranged to have 25% of all of my profits to go to charity. So in this case, every piece that I design for the show, a quarter of the proceeds will go to the Kol Hope Foundation For Children. Charity giving has always been my business motto.

I’m lucky enough that I’ve met generous people in my career. There are people that really help get John De Porter off the ground and I really admire the values that are communicated through this. It’s a privilege and pleasure for me to do it for the kids.

Was there anything that maybe you learned from or discovered from being part of PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion Week?

Well, I’m collaborating closely with designer Francis Libiran and they’re making me discover the Philippine culture through the dresses, through the design, the silhouettes, and the materials they use i.e.: the Mother of Pearl, horsehair etc. It’s really a wonderful opportunity for me to learn because The Philippines is an area where I haven’t been there yet so that would be my next trip.

Next year?

I’ve been invited by Mr. Libiran, so I’m going to see him in The Philippines.

Describe the John De Porter woman?

My clients are very smart women. They’re very educated about what they buy and they’re very practical. They are busy businesswomen so the jewelry needs to be well made, well priced and practical.  It needs to be beautiful. I get away with a very little mistake. My clients are very demanding — in a good way.
