When you were a child were you always into fashion? Tell me when you first fell in love with fashion?

Everybody gets asked what they want to be when they grow up. When I was younger my answer would always be David Bowie or a leader of a witch coven. I was weird and my interests always leaned towards art and mostly music. I loved the London punks and the Seattle grunge scene.  [I] never really [was] invested on fashion as a young lad, until I came across Rick Owens Fall 2003 show.

I was in awe! It was something I didn’t quite understand, but I couldn’t take my eyes of it! The models were like rock star witches in lavish kick ass clothes. I started looking it up on the internet and found Helmut Lang, McQueen, Westwood and the rest was history.

Are you inspired by any designers in the fashion industry? If so who and why?

I take a lot of inspiration from Rick Owens, Sruli Recht, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Helmut Lang, Martin Margiela, to name a few; their work inspires because we share the same aesthetic of stepping out of what is considered conventional.

What do you love about menswear?

I love menswear because, I love the idea of breaking rules! And feel menswear has a lot of boundaries to break.

Why did you decide to do a menswear collection surrounded by knitwear?

I wanted to shy away from the stiff suit looks. I was aiming for comfort, [and] want my customers to feel more natural and free.

Can further expand on the inspiration behind your Spring/Summer 2015 menswear collection?

The collection is called “Zeitgeist” which is a German term for ‘Time Ghost’. The term Zeitgeist is the thought that influences the culture of a particular period in time.

[My] collection is a story of a time traveler that fell into a time lapse where different time periods collide into one; (Roman, Greek, Egyptian, and the 21st century). [The] different time periods [will] showcase different cultures and religions [and] show diversity [by] taking inspiration from the men of Toronto.

How does it feel to be mentored by one of Canada’s fashion iconic designers Kirk Pickersgill of Greta Constantine and how did it come about?

It’s very overwhelming! I was an intern for Greta Constantine for quite some time. I have learned a lot from Kirk and Stephen. After an amazing year of interning I decided to leave Greta Constantine to venture out to my true calling which is menswear. As a young designer I didn’t know where to start, [so] I asked Kirk for advice on what my first step should be? Coincidentally, TOM*s EMDA was around the corner and Kirk was generous enough to lend a hand and stand as my mentor.

Kirk as a mentor has been more than what I expected. I have and still learn from him and for that, I am truly grateful.

If there was celebrity you can designer for who would it be and why?

Jared Leto is pretty cool. Maybe Jamie Campbell Bower.

Who is the Patrick Salonga man?

Salonga men is self-motivated he strives for autonomy and freedom with no regard for convention or what’s wildly accepted. He is motivated by revolution and changing things. He wants to increase freedom and lower boredom. He naturally and strongly resist conformity. He is integrated to think, do and be different.
