Undoubtedly whenever we hear that there is going to be a student focused presentation during our global coverage of various fashion presentations, we do the happy dance. It’s so great when design students allow us to peek inside their creative world and see what they forecast, create and interpret. This was certainly the case during the “Student Runway” showcase recently held at Perth Fashion Festival.  Here are three students who really gave us our money’s worth!

Samuel Donaldson, a recent grad from Polytechnic West is the head of Iamsamdesign. His keen eye for tailoring allows him to create looks that have that touch of structured sophistication. In this presentation,  there was a very zombie-esque treatment of models who all were donning quite an eclectic collection of pieces. Donaldson’s eye  for tailoring is evident here as well as a fabulous collection of varying materials used to create the different looks from the safety pinned leather coat to the coziest of cable-knit sweaters.

Jessica Hogg who also from Polytechnic West shows label Lettie ‘s inspiration hits closer to home — from her grandmother. Her ability to create voluminous silhouettes while highlighting the intracies of layers, panels and of course the use of the most unexpected fabrics (love the autumnal maple leaves neck piece) created a line that celebrates her own personal heritage.

It’s clear that a career in costume design is what Nicole Marrington dreams of.  This particular line inspired by the unique layers as seen in Mongolia, liberally boasts fabulous cuts, the use of heavy duty fabrics and of course a very interesting translation of colour blocking.  Buoyed by the use of these fabulous masks, Marrington harkens back to an era of old world heritage.
