Who is TOM*?

That burning question was teased via social media for weeks. Inquiring minds wanted to know. Well, now the fashionable minds can rest easy: we have the answer.

An official menswear only fashion week will be taking place in Toronto, Canada this summer. Officially named Toronto Men’s Fashion Week aka TOM*FW (get it?) this fashionable summit will be blazing Canadian ramps from August 12th through August 14th, 2014  giving a much deserved mainstage platform for Canadian menswear designers.

Menswear designers have historically taken a backseat to the womenswear fashion presentations around the world, so this time, thanks to TOM*FW’s Executive Director and Founder of TOM*FW, Jeff Rustia, this will be the 6th Men’s Fashion Week in the world alongside  London, Milan, Singapore, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

According to the press release, TOM*FW’s mantra is to focus on the menswear space, thereby increasing the profile and visibility of this vital menswear scene. With this focus, TOM*FW aims to stimulate the menswear fashion economy as well as working towards “boost[ing] tourism and to create a huge economic impact on Toronto through increased spending in men-focused products, brands and services.”

“It’s time that menswear designers have their own platform and runway to showcase their innovation, creativity and talent here in Toronto,” notes Rustia. “Logistically, it doesn’t make sense to lump the men with the women, because it is its own entity, it has its own set of buyers and editors, and audience.”

The packed fashion week schedule includes The Menswear Collections, by the country’s most iconic and innovative designers. As well featuring top menswear brands and men’s shops in TOM*FW Presents. Other highlights include Suits & Styles, featuring the latest in suit designs; The International Spotlight Series showcases notable menswear designers from around the world. Avant Garde features the collections of designers who are breaking the mold and setting the course for modern men’s style.

In addition to all of that, as a Canadian brand, TOM*FW is pleased to present The Emerging Designer Menswear Award (EDMA), which is a part of the Designer Menswear Fund, an initiative to promote and nurture home grown design talent, and to inspires young designers to specialize in menswear. The EDMA grand prize winner is selected from a group of five finalists by a distinguished panel of judges. All five finalists will present their collection at the grand finale on the last night of TOM*FW. Each collection is scored based on visual appearance, style, communication and marketability.

Part of the proceeds of TOM*FW will go to Men’s Fashion for Hope, a special initiative that bring fashion and charity together in support of the Kol Hope Foundation for Children, to help kids with disabilities at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto

Rustia is no stranger to bringing visionary initiative to fruition. He was the brainchild behind Canada’s first Philippine Fashion Week  – a six-day cultural fashion  extravaganza. The June 2013 event (where Ramp1885 was also the Digital Media Sponsor) brought an estimated economic impact of $5.5 million dollars (CDN)  to Toronto, attracted over 10,000 unique attendees, and over 31,000 visitors. (Enigma Research, Canada and FEO, Festival Events Ontario).  TOM*FW will match and most likely exceed these numbers.

We at Ramp1885.com are thrilled to be a part of this very unique fashion vision. We will be bringing you highlights from the runway shows, exclusive designer interviews as well as other fun stuff. Stayed tuned because TOM*FW as it makes history, one runway at a time.
