Feature: Highlights from Madrid Fashion Week S/S 2013

We gave Standing O’s to these designers from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Madrid.

Juana Martin

She looks to re-invent the Southern Spanish style moving away from the traditional ruffles and tassles to a more modern interpretation. She notes that in order to understand that woman one must understand her life and her “freshness and her contemporary appeal” and here she does all of that in spades. Her Spanish woman is aggressive, focused and celebrates the freedom of expression. It’s fresh, Spanish and definitely sultry.

Carlos Diez

This designer (and DJ) definitely shows his experimental and amusing side with his riveting pieces. Presenting a collection which can easily double as art installations, Diez knows what catches the eye as well as turn heads. He quotes a poem by revered Latin-American poet, Alfonsina Storni as his way of describing his fashion storyboard.

Flee towards the forest

Go to the mountains

Clean your mouth

Live in a hut

Touch with your hands

The damp earth

Feed yourself

With bitter roots

Drink from the rocks

Sleep on the frost

Clean your clothes

With saltpeter and water

Talk with the birds

And set sail at dawn

And when your flesh

Has returned to you

And when you have put

Into it the soul

That through the bedrooms

Became entangled

Then, good man,

Ask that I be white

Ask that I be like snow

Ask that I be chaste

-Alfonsina Storni.

Juanjo Oliva

Clean lines and doses of elegance defines this collection by this noted Spanish designer. Any piece can easily be found in the expansive closet of a Bond Girl. Perfectly fitted blazers, the use of solid colours and beautiful accents that add a hint of glamour to an impeccably dressed figure. Combine Grecian Goddess with the cinematic leading lady of a Humphrey Bogart movie and you have this superb collection which drips of old school romance.

Maria Escoté

The playful nuance mixed with a hint of rock ‘n’ roll is the very being of her collection. Fantastic sized hearts, fabulous ruffle details and of course the use of various appliqués and cutout works creates, what would be the ultimate avant garde outfit. She describes her collection as such:

“The banquet is set before you. Trays of colours are ready to be devoured by your eyes, the forms served raw for the enjoyment of your body. This is a banquet of the like that has never been seen before, not to be devoured with your appetite, but with your imagination. An insatiable hunger, one capable of bringing you some unique and unforgettable moments, transporting you to an unknown world where cannibals devour everything in order to learn, only to regurgitate new ideas. Devour in order to be devoured. Teeth will be of no use to you; use your senses and sink them into everything you are about to see. Rip into the tissues and experience the bodily enjoyment of this unprecedented banquet. Savour it. You can help yourselves as many times as you like. Satiate your hunger, my dear cannibals…”

Teresa Helbig

Her youth was spent in the haute couture atelier of her mother’s in Barcelona and that is clearly evident with this collection. It’s oodles of  fun with works of  lace and graphic details as well as giving the silhouette an energized youthful fashion forward feel. Each piece’s presentation varies about as much as the fabrics used from her  lace 2-peice hot pant set, to gorgeous chiffon layered gowns the young urbanista is tailor made for this collection.
