Sydney’s Style

Sydney, Australia

This year for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2014, there were the usual suspects that enthralled the crowds gathered in Sydney to find out what will be trending this season.  There were, however, a few upstarts and surprises from names and lines that could potentially change the way Down Under fashion is viewed. Without further adieu, here are the collections that stood out and made their presence felt on the runway and off.

Bec & Bridge

The modern woman can rest easy as their fate has been saved through the design duo of Bec & Bridge, which featured a collection of silhouetted subtlety, presenting a muted palette of black, white, and nude on the runway that was synonymous with understated brilliance. The clean lines shown throughout the collection spoke volumes about the direction of women’s clothing. Fitted tops, bold colors, and simple hues are still a tried and true staple that shows no signs of slowing down.

Dion Lee II

Australia’s current ‘Golden Child’/'It Boy’ Dion Lee proved yet again why he is the force to be reckoned with Down Under. Exclusively featuring his Dion Lee II line, the young designer left little doubt that his christening was no fluke. His collection hit the runway with a slew of sartorial impact, playing up denim and his signature cut-outs that without question was the most anticipated – and celebrated – show of the entire week.

Christopher Esber

A designer who is sure to have his profile significantly raised after this year’s Fashion Week is Esber, who presented a line of tailor-made pieces that paled only to Dion Lee’s in terms of acclaim and applause. After this year’s presentation, the general public will be on the lookout for his upcoming collections, if this year was any indication.

Ellery

Kym Ellery celebrated her Australian roots by creating a line specifically for her native land, featuring over-sized silhouettes, pants under dresses and huge bell sleeves that had the crowd whispering about where she would go next sartorially. No matter where she decides to go, it is clear that fashionistas are prepared to follow.

Maticevski

Bomber jackets coupled with circle skirts? Body-hugging tops, LBD that go beyond the mundane and expected? Honorable mention status goes to Toni Maticevski, whose line was tailored to perfection and was a winner from the first piece presented. His manipulation of traditional pieces was one of the highlights of the week and all the more reason to expect more from this designer in the near future.
