Studying at UK’s Central St. Martin’s didn’t stop this designer from attending PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion Week with not one but two collections: His own line as well as in the capacity of Fashion Director for the Filipino retail giant, BENCH. Right before his presentation, Rolande Alzaté chatted with us about how his academic training helped honed his eye for design and how sometimes it’s better to refocus your inspiration.

Tell me about your collections.

I just came from London UK because I was studying at Central St. Martins. So, when I heard about it, I want to be part of the first ever Canada Philippine fashion week so I focused on building this collection. I wanted to show something that’s more different from what I usually show in The Philippines. Jeff Rustia (Executive Director and founder)  had said this fashion week would be a little bit different and it’s about celebrating Filipinos in general. So, I signed up for it.

I brought a 20-piece collection. I’m also bringing another collection because I’m a Fashion Director for BENCH in The Philippines, so I’m bringing my collections from that brand to this show.
