Independencia Pride: A Fashionable State of Mind at Canada Philippine Fashion Week

By: Hina P. Ansari

Canada Philippine Fashion Week regaled the stylish set for the second year in a row. Now a celebrated legit fashion week, CPFW had some pretty incredible moments on the runway throughout its days (and nights)-long fete.

We have our favourite designers noted — some renowned stalwarts of style, while others are starting to make their name on the runway. First, we take a look at the designs that wowed us during Canada Philippine Fashion Week’s “Independencia: Filipino Fashion & Style” evening hosted in partnership with the Philippine Consulate of Toronto, and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

Shanon Pamaong

This Canadian designer has always focused on supporting the Filipino fashion scene. He honed  his design sensibility by working with various fashion designers in Toronto, New York and Paris. Also with a deep understanding of the value of education, Pamaong supports future designers through his capacity as a teacher at various international schools including at the Philippine International School of Fashion (La Salle College International) His current collection focused his attention to the unorthodox including the impressive pleating detail which threads throughout his womenswear collection while shaking up the menswear space with his innovative use of experimental fabrics and designs.

Renee Salud

Known as the “Ambassador of Philippine Fashion” Renee Salud (or “Mama Salud” as she’s affectionally called), is one of the premier designers from the Philippines. Her collections have seen the runways of New York, Paris, Tokyo and Milan and now thanks to CPFW, includes Toronto as part of her fashion forward circuit. Notable women who have donned her designs include First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos, Mrs. Gina De Venecia, Ms. Rosemary “Baby” Arenas, Ms. Guia Gomez and the late Mrs. Dulce Saguisag. This season she brought forth a delightful ensemble of gorgeous floor length gowns, voluminous skirts, and oversized topcoat detail all boasting various silhouettes.  Emphasized by Salud’s layering detail her designs — all buoyed by pretty embroidery and strategic placement of crystals and colour — harkened a Scarlett O’Hara essence with the sherbert-esque colour palette that to me, alluded to a wondrous Alice in Wonderland appeal. And let us not forget to mention her homage to the traditional Filipino fashion detail,  called “Terno” — the butterfly sleeve.

Project Terno

Launched last year as part of CPFW’s inaugural celebration of Filipino style “Project Terno” is now a staple where fashion designers from Canada and the Philippines are invited to re-imagine the “Terno” sleeve, the Filipino fashion trademark: The butterfly sleeve.
